immunity boosting smoothie

Have you ever tried an immunity boosting smoothie before? This is a time when everyone should be hyper-aware of their health! Do you realize that our bodies and ultimately our lives, literally depends on our ability to fight off infection and disease? As a child, my mom always made us take some herbal remedy or another in order to ward off disease and infection. Carrying that same tradition with me into adulthood, I’ve created several immunity boosting smoothies for myself and my family.

Why take an immunity boosting smoothie?

We know an immunity boosting smoothie is not going to cure every illness, but it’s a great way to improve your health. Also, it will give your body what it needs to optimize it’s resistance to environmental stressors and illness in general. Shouldn’t we always prioritize our own health and wellbeing though? Don’t wait until you actually get sick before you “decide” to take your health seriously.

Mother natures calling for our attention.  She’s not asking, the earth is demanding that we pay attention to the health of both ourselves and the environment. Everything on the planet is connected. The sooner we accept these facts, the better off we will all be! Having said that, an immunity-boosting smoothie is perfect for every season of the year.

My go-to meal on the go!

We all know that we should eat better to live better! But when you’re busy and running around trying to check off all of your to-dos, the quality of the food you put into your “temple”, tends to suffer. I’ve found that a nutrient-dense superfood smoothie is a perfect antidote!

When it comes to making the most out of one meal, I’ve got this one beat! I came up with the ultimate superfood smoothie recipe, out of necessity. Working in healthcare is very stressful and truly is a labor of love. But when it comes to your own self-care, it’s far too easy to neglect your own needs. This is especially true as you tend to those who are sick and require your care. My goal was simple. Pack the most beneficial and powerful nutrients into a simple dense packet that can be quickly consumed on the go!

I did my research, found some of the most powerful superfoods needed to combat a high-stress and high-intensity lifestyle on the go, and tastes good! Voila! A powerhouse-nutrient dense superfood smoothie on the go folks! It tastes good, makes you feel rejuvenated, and helps bring those “fight-or-flight” hormones back into alignment.

For your ultimate superfood smoothie, you will need:

  1. 1/3 tsp of ashwagandha root powder.
  2. 1/2 Tsp of Moringa oleifera leaf powder
  3. 1 level tsp of spirulina
  4. 1 tsp (or 5grams) of Dr. Mercola’s fermented beet powder
  5. 1/3 teaspoon of cinnamon
  6. 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  7. 1/2 cup frozen or fresh organic berry medley ( also available at trader joe’s)
  8. 8 fluid oz (or 29.57 grams) of almond milk

You can also make this smoothie the day before. I usually just blend the dry ingredients into my smoothie before I dash out at the start of my day.

Here are some of the benefits of the main ingredient in my ultimate superfood smoothie:

  1. Ashwagandha-  known to be a highly prized, adaptogenic super root, used frequently in Ayurvedic medicine to increase vitality, relieve stress, and boost brain and cognitive function.
  2. Moringa oleifera leaf powder- the miracle leaf rich in calcium, iron, potassium, and vitamin A as well as all the essential amino acids (comparable to wheatgrass, spiraling and chlorella. It’s also high in protein, vitamin A, calcium, and essential amino acids).
  3. Spirulina- has the highest protein and beta carotene levels of all green superfoods and also has naturally occurring GLA ( Gamma Linolenic Acid), a popular fatty acid with numerous health benefits.
  4. Turmeric- Is known to be an anti-inflammatory powerhouse.

These are just a few of the benefits of incorporating a superfood smoothie into your daily selfcare routine! Also, if you want to find out more about the benefits of these and other spices, check out my recipe for anti-inflammatory detox beverage and more right here!

The Ultimate Superfood Smoothie Recipe

Making the switch

We all have heard about the benefits of a vegan or vegetarian diet! While it sounds awesome, a lot of people are still clueless about great sources of plant-based proteins to choose from. If that sounds like you, I’ve got an awesome list of my top “10 Great Protein Sources” for vegan diets!

There is no need to feel discouraged or overwhelmed about switching to a vegan or vegetarian diet. Why? Because there are literally so many options out there! I’ve found the challenge is one of knowing what to actually eat. Added to that,  how do you get creative and find affordable food sources?

It’s really not that complicated. Switching to plant-based protein sources simply means more variety in my book. Great sources of plant protein are found in beans (i.e. pinto beans, kidney beans, etc), grains, etc.

About that vegan diet

The real question is not, “ do vegan diets contain enough protein?” But rather, which plant proteins have a high protein content and how can we creatively incorporate them into our diets in a sustainable way? On the surface, a simple yes, is the short answer. However, when one considers how food is currently being sourced and produced, the issue quickly becomes more complex and thought-provoking.

But, let’s answer the first question and save the other for another, more in-depth discussion on food production, insecurity, and commercial agricultural practices! First of all, there are a lot more sources of plant-based proteins than you think! And yes, vegan diets do get enough protein from plant sources!

The hype

Truthfully, the media and marketing have turned veganism/vegetarianism into a “thing” rather than a simple shift to a healthier lifestyle. For anyone who has struggled with yo-yo diets, health issues, etc, making the switch to a plant-based diet will literally change your life! That’s literally why I decided to do a little bit of research in order to find at least 10 great protein sources for vegan diets.

This is also, one of the reasons I created a simple vegan detox program for my peeps to help them get on track with sustainable weight loss and a healthy lifestyle! I wish someone had done that for me a while back but, here you go!

10 vegan protein sources pinterest blog image

To help you lose the overwhelm and cluelessness, here’s my go-to list of top 10 vegan (plant-based) protein sources:

  1. amaranth (it’s one of the few complete protein sources; classified as a “pseudocereal”).
  1. quinoa (also one of the few complete protein sources; classified as a “pseudocereal”).
  2. lentils (high in protein and fiber to promote healthy gut bacteria.)
  1. Organic tempeh, tofu, edamame (these are derived from soybeans are also considered to be complete protein sources).
  1. Seitan  ( also considered to be the highest source of plant protein at 25g per 100g. however, seitan is not an option for those who have issues with gluten because seitan is made from wheat gluten).
  1. Chickpeas and most varieties of beans (i.e. pinto, kidney beans, etc; rich in minerals and complex carbs).
  1. Nutritional yeast (a deactivated strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast, commercially sold as a yellow powder or flakes and has a flavor similar to cheese).
  1. Hemp seed (10g protein plus fiber and other nutrients).
  1. Spirulina (blue-green algae are a great source of fiber and filled with nutrients).
  1. *Wild rice (contains more protein than conventional rice and contains vitamins and minerals).

*There is cause for concern about arsenic when consuming rice grown in polluted areas, so know where your food is sourced and keep it organic!

10 Great Protein Sources For Vegan Diets

Afro-fusion style gumbo blog feature image

As I continue to explore the diversity of the culinary world, I’ve come to the conclusion that every culture has something wonderful to share. Spicy and complex flavors are my childhood favorites and my take on traditional gumbo is what I’m bringing to the fall table! My Afro-fusion style gumbo is a healthier and spicier take on this old southern favorite.

Rich and hearty soups are a staple of African cultures worldwide and the diaspora is no different! Gumbo has a rich and savory history and is well known throughout the southern united states and much of the nation in general. The fact of the matter is that I love food in all it’s richness and diversity so much, that I’ll try just about any dish (from anywhere in the world) at least once. That’s why I love making my Afro-fusion style gumbo throughout the fall and winter seasons.

Homemade beats store-bought every time and that’s why it’s always a good idea to check your pantry each season to make sure you the necessary ingredients for those home favorites. Also, it’s a good idea to always check food ingredients and items to make sure that they are GMO and additive-free. For more on this, check out my earlier post on toxic additives in your name brand mayo!

My Love of gumbo

This love for gumbo stems from the fact that it reminds me of a traditional okra soup that is made in south-eastern Nigeria. It too is composed of a variety of meats including seafood. Unlike the traditional version from back home, it’s more of a gravy, is eaten with rice (some add the rice to the gumbo), and lacks the level of heat and spiciness.

I’m not going to get into the history of gumbo here but suffice it to say that it is a yummy dish that varies across the state of Louisiana and the southern united states in general. All I can say is, it is delicious and filling. Depending on what recipe you go with, the level of richness is synonymous with the number of fat calories.

In one of my creative moments, I decided to cook an Africanized version of this dish that contains far fewer calories and increased the spice and heat profile. I call it, “ Afro-fusion gumbo” because the flavors differ from the typical version of gumbo, which has far fewer calories (due to fat) and uses the spice profile that I grew up with.

Below is a list of my go-to spices for my Afro-fusion style gumbo recipe. Most of these spices are perfect for boosting the immune system as well as a number of other health benefits!

Ingredients for my Afro-fusion style gumbo:

  1. Shrimp (NOT farm-raised, that stuff is trash)-2 cups
  2. Organic andouille sausage-1 1/2 package (cut into coin-sized rounds)
  3. Free-range organic chicken-(you can also substitute this with rotisserie chicken to cut down on cook time)
  4. Curry powder-2 tablespoons
  5. Turmeric-1 1/2 tablespoon
  6. Nigerian hot chili powder (use black pepper for a low lectin version)
  7. Bay leaves-3
  8. Dried thyme- 1 teaspoon
  9. Dried basil- 1/2 teaspoon
  10. Garlic- 15 cloves (roughly chopped)
  11. Coconut oil-2/3 cup
  12. Indian basmati rice( for a low lectin version)-1 cup, steamed
  13. 7 cups homemade chicken broth
  14. 1 cup shrimp stock (I make mine from scratch)
  15. Red onion-1, large
  16. Okra-1 1/2 cup of roughly chopped okra
  17. Green bell pepper-1 large sized
  18. Celery- 1 stalk, finely chopped (I prefer to use only a little of celery in my version)
  19. 1 small bunch of fresh parsley (I left this out of my recipe because I don’t care for parsley)
  20. Cajun seasoning (make sure it’s a brand without mystery ingredients!)
  21. 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour (use an unbleached and additive-free organic brand)

Assembling your ingredients

Once you’ve assembled all of your ingredients for this Afro-fusion gumbo, you’re ready to make your gumbo. Next, start by chopping all the vegetables; you can also do this the day before in order to save time.  The key to this dish is the roux (I call it a fancy word for gravy, but oh well)! To make the roux, in a large dutch oven (or cast iron pot)heat the oil over medium heat. After the oil is hot, whisk in the flour to form a roux. Cook the roux, stirring constantly, until almost black in color, 50 to 55 minutes.

Bringing it all together

Next, slowly pour in the shrimp and chicken stocks while constantly stirring until the stock is fully incorporated into the roux. Mix in the dried basil, cayenne, garlic, celery, bay leaves, bell pepper, okra, parsley, onion, etc. Bring to a simmer, then cook, stirring occasionally, until thickened, 1 hour.

Before you add in the smoked sausage, in a separate skillet on medium-high heat place the sausage slices and brown them well on one side (2-3 minutes) and then use a spatula to flip each over onto the other side to brown. Remove to a plate. Then, add 1/2 cup of the chicken broth to the hot skillet that had the sausage to deglaze the pan. Pour the broth and drippings into your large soup pot.

Add the remaining cups of chicken broth plus the shrimp broth, veggies, parsley, and roux to the pot and stir well to fully incorporate all of the ingredients.

Finally, add the remaining ingredients to your Afro-fusion gumbo mix except for the rice, and simmer until the seafood is cooked and the okra is tender (approximately 10 to 12 minutes). Ladle into bowls and serve with a scoop on top or you can add your rice to the gumbo instead.

Afro-fusion Style Gumbo: A Healthier Alternative To An Old Southern Favorite

Over the years I’ve learned the power of what diet can do for the body. It can help heal or cause disease. When I first thought of trying a vegan detox, I still wondered if it was all hype. After I decided to use myself as a guinea pig, I can’t deny it’s effectiveness.

We’ve heard so much about the vegan lifestyle, plant-based diets and more. The real take away is that adopting a plant-based diet will make a huge difference in health.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row admin_label=”Row” _builder_version=”3.0.51″ background_position_1=”top_left” background_repeat_1=”no-repeat” make_fullwidth=”on”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”3.0.51″ background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” border_style=”solid”]

We all know how hard it can be to shed those unwanted pounds, ditch the bloat and ultimately gain a healthier body!

Over the years I’ve found the best way to reset my body, lose the bloat and stubborn weight, is to for the greens. In my case, that means going on a vegan detox or radically upscaling my fruits and veggies. That all translates into minimally processed foods, no animal products coupled with healthy oils and nuts!

Who would have thought a vegan detox could help you look better, feel better without the pressure?! I’m not one for gimmicks or yo-yo diets so I keep it simple and stress-free by upscaling my intake of fresh foods.

Adopting a vegan diet for the short-term or on a permanent basis is always a good thing. Every day more research comes out about how a vegan or plant-based diet promotes healthy weight, increases healthy cholesterol levels and boosts longevity.

There are so many benefits to going on a vegan detox that I simply don’t have the time to go into it all. Needless to say, after a lot of feedback from friends and besties I began a vegan detox program to help other women get the results they want without the drama or stress of trying to figure it all out on a busy schedule.

So why go on a 10 Day Vegan Program at all (or for any other length of time)?  While it’s not a cure-all for every ailment under the sun doing a vegan detox (diet reset) has a lot of benefits.

The Benefits Of A Vegan / Plant-Based Diet

  1. Better sleep
  2. More energy
  3. Improved digestion
  4. Radiant and healthier skin
  5. Improved mood
  6. Lowers your risk for diabetes and heart disease
  7. Improved weight management
  8. Reduces inflammation

So what do vegan and plant-based mean?

In simple terms, a vegan diet means a diet free of all animal products-no meat, poultry, dairy, or even honey! A plant-based diet is based on fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains. I like to think of it in terms of a continuum where at one end lies the strict vegan and somewhere near the middle is a diet that is largely plant-based.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image admin_label=”Offering/ Lead Magnet Goes Here” _builder_version=”3.0.51″ src=”http://freedomatthecrossroads.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/10-DAY-VEGAN-DETOX-PROGRAM

Point for point, a vegan detox is a must not just to detox your body in the short term but as a way of life! It will literally change your life and your health.  While a number of research documents highlight the benefits of vegan and plant-based diets, few tell you how to make that shift.

While I don’t believe in restrictions, vegan and plant-based diets are sustainable only when you incorporate them as part of a healthy lifestyle. So a good way to start is to try a vegan detox program to help reset your mind as well as your body. Issues related to stress, fatigue and an inability to sleep can often be eased with what you put on your plate.

For instance, it’s been noted that certain foods like bananas, sweet potatoes, broccoli, have been shown to improve sleep cycles. Not only that, did you know cashew butter, peanut butter, avocados, kale, almonds, walnuts, spinach, and squash are all nutritional powerhouses?

They contain vitamin B6, tryptophan, and magnesium and do a lot for boosting your sleep cycle. So if sleep is an issue for you and you don’t want to deal with the nasty side effects of synthetic drugs, adopting a vegan diet is the way to go!

Also, greens such as Kale, Swiss chard, fortified almond or soy milk, and dried figs have a higher amount of calcium than dairy milk (which researchers have said, actually leach calcium from the body). Plus, if you’ve been dealing with inflammatory illness, plant-based diets are an excellent way to relieve those ailments.

Broken record here but, foods rich in omega-3 fats like chia and flax, as well leafy greens (i.e. kale) contain chlorophyll which helps to increase the alkalinity of the body.

In English, that means they help to combat inflammation in the body which in turn helps with weight loss and bloating!!

The average American diet is high in processed foods that are associated with an increase in weight gain, high blood pressure, and other inflammation-related illnesses.

Switching to a plant-based or mostly plant-based diet is one of the most sustainable ways to lose weight and keep it off. Also, it will help you look and feel better in the long run and who doesn’t want that? That’s why I always recommend a vegan detox program of some sort to flush toxins out of your body and reset your system for better health and wellness.

The 10 Day Vegan Detox

homemade chicken noodle soup blog feature image

If you haven’t heard about the proven benefits of homemade chicken noodle soup, you’ve probably been buried underneath a pile of rubble by now! Let me just start by saying, momma knew what she was talking about when she said that chicken soup is a cure-all staple!

Needless to say, the power is in the bone broth (i.e. chicken bones Y’all!), spices, and other healthy ingredients that make up this recipe. For me, I’m putting an African twist on this favorite recipe so make sure you head over to my Youtube site to see how the full recipe comes together in real color!

My inspiration for this Afro-fusion homemade chicken noodle recipe comes from childhood nostalgic moments living in Nigeria. When I was a little girl, my mom gave us all kinds of potions and tonics to keep illness and poor health at bay. To this day I can still taste that pungent flavor of Norwegian cod liver oil on my tongue! We also had all kinds of soups, and beverages that she and the elder women in our neighborhood swore by!

This is a lot different from the condensed canned stuff masquerading as “as good as” homemade chicken noodle soup! The only things you’ll find in those cans are some GMO chicken, lots of sodium, overcooked bleached flour noodles, preservatives, and more.

With that in mind here are the ingredients you will need for this Afro-fusion homemade chicken noodle soup:

1. 4 medium chicken drumsticks (organic, free-range chickens)

2. 1 small red onion

3. 1 small yellow onion

4. 1/4 cup of chopped green onions (organic)

5. 3 cloves of garlic (medium)

6. Organic gluten-free spaghetti pasta (follow directions for serving size)

7. 2 tablespoons curry powder

8. 1 teaspoon turmeric

9.  1/2 teaspoon of allspice

10. 1/4 teaspoon spicy paprika

11. 2 tablespoons of Himalayan pink salt

12. 3 tablespoons of Braggs Amino Acids

13. 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg

To bring this recipe to life is really easy and there are no fancy steps involved. Simply fill a large soup pot with 6 cups of water and bring to a boil while tossing in all over your dry spices and the other ingredients. Next, add the onions, garlic, and chicken drumsticks to the pot and boil at medium heat for 25 minutes. Also, you can add other veggies to this mix as well (i.e. carrots, etc) in order to make this dish your own.

Next, turn the heat down to low and allow your homemade chicken noodle soup creation to simmer for an additional 20-30 minutes and add your noodles in the final 20 minutes. To see what this dish looks like check out the video!

I’ve received plenty of questions about my go-to skincare regime and remedies but this one is becoming my favorite! This particular DIY face mask is my #1 DIY recipe because it helps fight lines, wrinkles, dark spots, acne and acne scarring. It’s loaded with potent ingredients to help naturally combat all my skincare concerns.

One thing you need to note though is that, regardless of how awesome your skincare routine, DIY face masks, elixirs or potions, what you eat (i.e. diet) plays a huge role when it comes to the health of your skin. My mamma always said “what you eat shows up on your face” and it’s so true!

Akey way to clean up your skin is to detox both your body and your diet of all the processed, prepackaged and other unhealthy foods you’ve been consuming by switching to a plant-based diet. Whether it’s vegan (which I prefer for this purpose), vegetarian or paleo; clean eating is the basis for a healthy youthful looking skin. My next secret weapon is my recipe stash of all-natural fresh DIY face masks.

Since I love avocado so much what better base ingredient to use in my DIY face masks than avocados?! I know there is a lot of talk about avocados in the media, but the benefits are real and lasting. Today’s recipe uses avocado as a base combined with raw honey, jojoba oil, and turmeric.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_image admin_label=”Offering/ Lead Magnet Goes Here” _builder_version=”3.0.51″ src=”http://freedomatthecrossroads.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/10-Day-Vegan-Detox-Program.png” show_in_lightbox=”off” url=”https://tonye-tariah-health-fitness.teachable.com/p/10-day-vegan-detox-program” url_new_window=”on” use_overlay=”off” sticky=”off” align=”center” always_center_on_mobile=”on” border_style=”solid” force_fullwidth=”off” /][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”3.0.51″ background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” border_style=”solid”]

Here’s the list of ingredients I use in this powerful DIY face mask along with their beneficial properties:

Avocados: the natural oils found in it can penetrate deep into the skin, helping to soften and hydrate dry and flaky patches. It is also an excellent source of more than twenty vitamins and minerals. The long list of nutrients includes vitamin B, C, E and K,  riboflavin, niacin, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, potassium, etc.

Also, because of their high healthy fat content avocados leave your skin looking softer and younger as they literally smooth and plumps up the skin.

Turmeric:  not only reduces inflammation, it also helps to reduce acne and any resulting scars. The curcumin in turmeric is excellent for helping to diminish dark spots and lightens the skin over time.

Matcha is his high-quality green tea containing chlorophyll which a powerful detoxifier. So what is it? Matcha is simply pulverized green tea, made from the entire leaf. Because It contains catechins (a type of polyphenol) matcha powder is a powerful antioxidant. The catechins(https://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/features/health-benefits-of-green-tea#1) help trap and inactivate free radicals in the skin, countering many of the signs of aging. I use the powder form in my DIY face mask recipes because it is much more concentrated than the liquid form we drink.

Raw honey is naturally antibacterial, so it’s great for acne treatment and gives the skin a dewy effect. While honey is great for the skin in general, raw honey is the best because it is pure, unheated, unpasteurized and unprocessed. This is probably one of the most important characteristics associated with raw honey as it preserves all the natural vitamins, enzymes, phytonutrients and other nutritional elements.

Jojoba: oil has a high amount of ceramides, which cover the skin cells and are responsible for their hydration. It quickly absorbs into the skin and does not leave behind any oily residue. Adding this to your DIY face mask gives it the extra punch it needs.

Jojoba helps in creating a powerful barrier against moisture loss, allergens, and dust pollution. Itl also moisturizes dry patchy skin and restores balance.

Not only that, jojoba is an excellent remedy for anyone suffering from skin disorders like eczema and rosacea. It has anti-inflammatory properties that help in reducing the redness caused by dry skin and other conditions like rosacea.

Top 5 Ingredients You Need In Your DIY Face Mask

anti-inflammatory beverage image

Aqn anti-inflammatory beverage must-have for the season!

It’s getting to be that time of year again and that calls for one anti-inflammatory beverage we all should have in our kitchen recipe book! I love foods that are packed with beneficial nutrients and this cup of cocoa does not disappoint.

A healthy twist on an old favorite

Made with unsweetened organic cocoa powder, this spicy version of a home favorite tastes yummy and is good for you too. I’m a turmeric fiend and I could not resist putting my own spin on a childhood favorite. The end result is spicy homemade turmeric cocoa that both tasty and loaded with health benefits.

About that Cocoa

Cocao is an ancient beverage and cocoa powder itself is loaded with flavonoids that improve blood flow, helps to balance cholesterol levels, rich in antioxidants, speeds healing, and aid in reducing your blood pressure, etc.

So, it only made sense to combine the superpowers of cocoa with the anti-inflammatory healing powers of turmeric and honey to make this a truly inspired power beverage!

Creating my homemade anti-inflammatory turmeric rich cocoa uses only a few ingredients and is low in calories but rich in texture as well as nutrients. Most of these benefits help heal the body and combat inflammation. Also, let’s  not forget to add that extra bit of decadence by topping it off with a dollop of froth using your home gadget right here!

Some of the benefits

Turmeric, cinnamon, and ginger all possess a myriad of health benefits. The beauty of this recipe is that these ingredients complement themselves in such a way as to create a complex blend of spicy goodness.

Ingredients

1. 1  1/2 tablespoon organic cocoa powder

2. 1/4 teaspoon organic turmeric powder.

3. 1/4 teaspoon ginger powder

4. 1/2 teaspoon of organic raw honey (sweeten to your own taste).

5. 1 cup of coconut-almond milk (vegan option; you can use dairy if that is your preference). I like to use this or a vegan cream for those times when I want to have a decadent frothy hot beverage!

6. 1/8 teaspoon fresh ground cinnamon.

Preparation

Bring almond coconut milk to a boil, adding all ingredients starting with the cinnamon, ginger, and turmeric followed by the cocoa powder. Make sure all of the ingredients are fully incorporated and then allow the mixture to briefly simmer.

You can also add in approximately 1/4 cup of water to thin out your mixture if the consistency is a little thick. Next, pour your beverage into your favorite mug and enjoy!

A little advice about refined sugars

Also, it’s  always a good idea to minimize your intake of processed sugar . This is one reason why I use raw honey, blackstrap molasses or ripened fruit to sweeten most of my dishes where possible (green stevia is another option).

For those days when I’m  craving a frothy decadent cup of yumminess, I use my trusty hand frother. You can get yours right here!

The One Anti-inflammatory Beverage You Need To Drink

Sometimes I almost feel like a chemist in a laboratory when I walk through the aisles of my local supermarkets! Each time I make that trek I become more and more convinced that that’s not the place I need to be picking up items to put in my stomach. I’m convinced the packaged food aisles are simply halls of death masquerading toxic food additives as “flavor” enhancers or “benign ingredients”.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row admin_label=”Row” make_fullwidth=”on” background_position_1=”top_left” background_repeat_1=”no-repeat” _builder_version=”3.0.51″][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”3.0.51″ background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” border_style=”solid”]

While packaged foods can be helpful sometimes (i.e. emergency foodstuffs for disaster relief, etc), they are definitely a class of foods every person should avoid if they value their lives!  Few people realize that those “packaged” foods they’re eating are loaded with toxic food additives!

Depending on what region of the world you live making sense of food labels can be a mysterious and frustrating task for the average person. For instance, here in the U.S. food label regulations and protections are ass-backward in my humble opinion.

Over the years, I’ve made it my business to become my own food and health advocate. I’ve been pouring over labels, ingredient names, questionable additives and so forth. What did I learn? Well, MY health and wellbeing are definitely not high up on the list of priorities for the packaged food industry!

Now I don’t know about you, but I LOVE my Mayo! I love it on my sandwiches and I sometimes use it as a base for some of my recipes. BUT after a bit of label reading, I was shocked to find an ingredient that is typically used in medical labs (and other industries), is showing up in my mayo! Say what? That’s right people. A dubious chemical that’s used in industrial processes and in certain medications, has a home in our mayonnaise! Everyday people seem to be missing the fact that this toxic food additive is hiding in their food!

Don’t take my word for it. When you read up on some of the “potential” health issues associated with this toxic food additive you will leave that jar of poison on the shelf too! I’m definitely not the only one raising the alarm about these toxic food additives and I am convinced that the more we rise up as consumers, the better of we will all be.

Coming from a background in the medical laboratory, I KNOW that this is nothing I want in my food. It has no business showing up on my plate! As a matter of fact, EDTA is actually banned in some countries outside of the U.S. (i.e. Australia) and is well regulated elsewhere (i.e. Europe) in its use in personal care items, etc.

EDTA is a chemical really should be in our food. The packaged food industry uses it as a stabilizer and preservative to give their products a longer shelf life-too bad it doesn’t give YOU a long shelf life!

Thanks to the organic revolution and food advocates, the use of these toxic food additives are coming to light. As a matter of fact, some of these large corporations are trying to rebrand themselves as “healthy” by doing what they should have done in the first place. What’s wrong with producing food items that are not harmful to consumers? There’s no need for “rebranding” if you don’t put questionable and toxic food additives in the foods you’re marketing to the public!

Enough with the additives already! If it’s not processed sugars, in our foods it’s chemicals with questionable impacts on our health and wellbeing. It’s up to us to help educate one another and compel our regulatory agencies and our legislators to do the right thing!

The processed and packaged food industries have done their best to hide what’s in our food as well as the origins of the ingredients they contain. Thanks to organizations like the EWG (Environmental Working Group )  and others like them, we are becoming educated about what’s in our food.

I have become a label fanatic simply to keep myself and my family from being poisoned by our food industries, which is a sad commentary on the state of our regulatory agencies here in the USA. While, I know no country has consumer protection down a 100%, we’ve got to do better starting with now.

As consumers, we need to educate ourselves about our food and demand that our legislators step up and force compliance. You really can’t trust the “fox” to “guard the henhouse”, that’s just nuts and totally ineffectual!

Bottom line? know what’s in your food and get involved in your community. It is our responsibility to rise up and demand better from the food industry and our legislators. The only way we can protect ourselves and our families is to get involved and educated about what’s in our food. I’ve found a number of online resources to help me fight back!

There are so many reasons why ingesting huge amounts of (processed) sugar is a terrible idea, but few people recognize the devasting impacts sugar can have on the body. Between the heavy marketing and confusing information from doctors and nutritionists alike, it’s no wonder that the facts get lost in the shuffle. Processed sugar in all its forms and packagings are literally killing us and if we don’t stop it right now, more people will die.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row admin_label=”Row” make_fullwidth=”on” background_position_1=”top_left” background_repeat_1=”no-repeat” _builder_version=”3.0.51″][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”3.0.51″]

Here are some basic facts about sugar:

1.First and foremost, sugar contains a lot of calories and has no essential nutrients. If that isn’t enough to make you pause, consider the fact that it also causes tooth decay by fueling the production and proliferation of harmful bacteria in the mouth.

2.Next, added sugar is high in fructose and can overload your liver. A sedentary lifestyle coupled with the typical western diet that’s filled with processed foods, high in sodium and lots of sugar; the high levels of fructose in this type of diet is transformed into fat in the liver. The danger here is that it can lead to non-alcoholic liver disease.

So what’s the big deal?

The problem arises from the fact that when sugar enters the bloodstream from the digestive tract, it gets broken down into glucose and fructose. Now, while glucose is present in every living organism (if we don’t get it through diet our bodies can also produce), fructose is much different. This particular type of sugar is neither needed by the body nor do we produce it in any significant quantity.

While it’s not a problem when we take in small quantities (i.e. from fruits) since fructose can only be metabolized by the liver, consuming large quantities of this sugar can overload the liver. Not only this, fructose elevates your LDL (a.k.a. bad cholesterol), blood fats and lowers insulin resistance!

[/et_pb_image][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”3.0.51″ background_layout=”light” text_orientation=”left” border_style=”solid”]

3.The big “C” or cancer is one of the leading causes of death throughout the world. It is essentially the uncontrolled growth and proliferation of cells. Also, since insulin is one of the major hormones responsible for regulating cell growth, excessive levels of this hormone can contribute to cancer.

Several studies also show that people who consume large amounts of sugar in their diet are at a much higher risk for both cardiovascular disease and cancer (with inflammation listed as a potential cause).

4. Still hanging on to that crazy train? sugar cause large amounts of dopamine to be released in the reward center of the brain and is very addictive. In fact, because of the large amounts found in processed foods, etc the danger lies in the fact these amounts are much larger than what we ordinarily are exposed to from natural sources.

The truth is that most of the processed and fast food industries are aware of the addictive nature of processed sugar but do little to address the issue so it falls to the consumer to educate his or herself about what’s in their food!

5. Experts now believe that consuming large amounts of sugar over a long period of time can accelerate the aging process. So those lines and wrinkles you’re seeing in the mirror? You can blame a good portion of that premature aging on your diet!

While the breakdown of the skin is the result of a natural process that’s known as glycation (a  process in which the sugar in your bloodstream attaches to proteins to form harmful new molecules called advanced glycation end products or AGEs). When you eat a lot of sugar you increase the amount of AGE production.
